1) Sandra bought a blouse that was on sale at 20% off. She paid $25.50 which included the tax which is 15% of the price. What was the original price of the blouse? (solution)

2) The inflation rate in Canada in 1984 was 12%. This means that each dollar in 1984 was worth 12% less than a dollar in 1980. If Sam earned $40,000 in 1984, how much would his salary have been worth in 1980? (solution)

3) James bought a used car which cost $5,000. He made a down payment of $500 and loaned the rest from a bank at 6.5% per annum to be paid back in equal monthly payments over a year and a half. (solution)
a) How much did James pay for the car? b) How much were his monthly payments?

4) Sally invested $15,000 in a term deposit which earns 8% per annum. How much money will she get when she withdraws her capital and interest after 5 years? (solution)

5) Write the following percents as decimals and fractions: (solution)
a) 2.5% b) 250% c) 0.04% d) 15.6% e) 126.3%

6) Harry bought some new golf clubs which were on sale at 25% off. He also bought a new jacket which was on sale at 15% off. The original price of the clubs was $350 and the original price of the jacket was $90. Find the total for his purchases if tax is 15%. (solution)

7) John had some work done on his car which increased the efficiency of the fuel consumption. He could now go 15 kilometres on a litre of gas whereas before the work he could only go 11km on a litre of gas. Find the percent improvement. (solution)

8) Find the following: (solution)

a) 2.5% of 370 b) 127% of 2,154 c) 12% of 328 d) 4.65% of 990

9) When union workers receive their salary checks, many deductions are made by their employer to pay taxes, employment insurance premiums and union dues. 15% of their salary is deducted to pay income tax, 1.3% is deducted for employment insurance and 0.5% is deducted in union dues. How much will May's check amount to if her bi-weekly salary is $900 before deductions? (solution)

.

SOLUTIONS

.

1) Let P = the original price of the blouse.
Since it was on sale at 20% off, Sandra paid 80% of P = 0.80P.
The tax added 15% to 80% of P
so our equation for the situation is:

0.80P + 0.15(0.80P) = $25.50

factor out 0.80P to get

1.15(0.80P) = $25.50

P = $25.50 + 1.15(0.80) = $27.74

Sandra's blouse cost $27.74 before the 20% discount.

2) Let S = the value of his salary in 1980
Since the inflation is 12%, his money is worth 88% of S in 1984

0.88(S) = $40,000

S = $40,000 + 0.88 = $45,454.55

His salary would've been $45,454.55 in 1980.

3) a) After the down payment, James owed $4500.
We add the interest of 6.5% for 1.5 years (simple interest) to get:

$4500 + 1.5($4500)(0.065) = $4938.75

When we add the $500 down payment, he paid $5438.75

b) He made 18 monthly payments of $4938.75 + 18 = $274.38.

4) The interest she earns over 5 years = $15,000 (0.08)(5) = $6000.00

After 5 years, Sally's term deposit is worth $21,000.

5) Write the following percents as decimals and fractions:
a) decimal = 0.025

fraction

decimal = 2.50

fraction

c) decimal = 0.0004

fraction

d) decimal = 0.156

fraction

e) decimal = 1.263

fraction

6) Since, there's 25% off, it leaves 75% on; and 15% off, leaves 85% on
Harry's bill before taxes is:

0.75 ($350) + 0.85 ($90) = $339.00

When we add the tax, we get:

(1.15) ($339.00) = $389.85

Harry's total purchases with tax cost him $389.85.

7) The increase in distance is 4 km so the percent improvement is:

The fuel consumption of John's car improved by 36.4%.

8) Find the following:
a) 0.025(370) = 9.25 b) 1.27(2,154) = 2735.50

c) 0.12 (328) = 39.36 d) 0.0465(990) = 46.035

9) May will receive her $900 minus the deductions which are:

0.15($900) + 0.013 ($900) + 0.005 ($900) = $151.20

May's check will amount to $748.80 after deductions.
